You do not have to be a COMAS member to attend meetings, but membership has its privileges. These include the following programs. Click on the links to the left for more specific details about these programs and available resources.
The Frag Program
This program is designed to generate a self sustaining source of coral fragments available to all COMAS members. Essentially, if a member has a coral that has grown well for them and that coral is able to be split then they break fragments off of the parent colony and pass them onto another club member. The new owner promises to pass a fragment of this coral along once it has doubled in size, and another once it has regrown. This repeats and ultimately generates lots of baby coral for all the members in the club. Access to these allows a member to experiment with new corals, obtain unusual specimens or simply add to their own current collection. At present there are approximately 30 different corals in the frag program ranging from the easy to keep xenia to the more demanding SPS such as acroporas. There are sign up lists for available fragments hosted within the COMAS forum. To be eligible to receive frags you need a current COMAS membership.
Library Program
COMAS has a large library of books and DVDs that have been donated and bought using member subscriptions. The library is available to all current members. Some books, which are very expensive will be bought to meetings, but are not available for loan. These include the large Reference books we have. In addition, the club retains sufficient funds to purchase books that members feel we should have. We also have the entire seminar series of the IMAC conference (2005) available for loan. Currently there is over $1,500 worth of saltwater texts and resources.
COMAS Equipment
COMAS members have the option of borrowing various items of equipment owned by the club. These include multiple sets of Glass Clamps and furniture dollies for moving tanks, fish fraps, light meters and other items such as highly accurate refractometers. These are all items you may only need once in a while, but may benefit the club as a whole. Again, these are only available to COMAS members.
Reef Shots - Photo of the Month Contest
The Reef Shots is a monthly competition where COMAS members can enter a picture of their tank, or that of another COMAS members tank. The entries each month are voted on inside the COMAS forum and the winner announced at the next meeting. The winner receives a prize, usually a $25 gift certificate redeamable at one of the local stores that sponsors COMAS. In addition, submitted photographs are collated each year into a COMAS calendar.
Buying & Selling Forum
COMAS members and non-members have the option using the COMAS hosted Buying & Selling forum. This is a convenient method of telling the local reefkeeping community of items you have for sale or trade. The forum can be found by clicking the forum tab in the box on the left. Note, you will need to register with the COMAS website before posting. It is most convenient if you use the same name here as you use on Reef Central.
