Introduction
Welcome to the COMAS Donor Program. Here you can find a list of corals, invertebrates and macroalgaes that are available through different COMAS member's generosity. The goal of the COMAS Donor Program is to encourage education, environmental awareness, and husbandry techniques through aquaculture.
Explanation
The COMAS Donor Program works by having one person that has great success with a coral to present this coral to be used as a Donor Coral. This person is called the Original Donor. The Original Donor will then fragment the coral and give the frags to the people who are next in line on the Want List. The people that receiving corals are now sponsors of that coral amd are placed on the Have List. The Original Donor will then record who they gave the frags to and what date. This isnformation needs to be added to the respective Donor Thread for that coral. The job of the Original Donor is complete, but they are encouraged to keep donating as frags become available. The Sponsors will then record when they received a frag and from whom, grow out their frags, report on their condition in their system, and frag their coral when it has double its original size. These frags are passed on to the next person on the Want List. Then, the Sponsor will record who they gave the frag to and when. The job of the Sponsor is now complete, however they are encouraged to donate at least one more frag of that coral to increase the pool of available frags. Lastly, the cycle will repeat itself to the next set of people on the Want List. Theoretically, this will allow an endless supply of frags to COMAS members at an exponential rate. Once a COMAS member has received a frag and passed on a frag, they can freely do what they wish with their coral. It is strongly encouraged to keep donating back to the COMAS Donor Program, but it is not a requirement.
Donating a new coral
Donors wishing to donate a coral to this program are required to establish a thread inside the COMAS forum. The thread should have as its title:
DONOR: (insert coral name)
This then allows the Frag program director to find all threads with a simple search. The Donor should also follow the COMAS frag program template that includes descriptions of the coral, its growth requirements and other pertinent information. If available a photograph should also be included.
Eligibility
To be eligible to receive a Donor Frag, you must be a current paid COMAS member, be on the Want List, and at the meeting they are being given out, and be able to provide the correct environment for it to grow. In an event where there is an available frag and no one available at the meeting, the Donor Frag can be passed on to the next available person even though they may not be on the Want List. That person then agrees to abide by the frag program rules and becomes a sponsor. If a COMAS Member has received a Donor Frag and it dies on them, they are able to place their name on the bottom of the Want List to receive a second try later on.
Contacts
Please contact the COMAS Donor Program Director if you need assistance with fragging a coral, creating a new list, with questions, or anything that might come to mind. The COMAS officers will also take general questions.
