(for the next months contest)

Reef Shots, the COMAS Photo of the Month Contest, is the newest of the COMAS programs.

Each month, interested members submit a photo of there choice to the COMAS Reef Shots Coordinator. Those photos are collected and posted on a page on this website. When the end of the month has arrived, photo submission is closed. Any photos recieved after that point will be held for the next month's contest. A voting thread is posted in the COMAS forum on Reef Central. This thead is left open for 10 days. The winner will recieve a prize donated to COMAS by one of the club sponsors. At the end of the year, our plan is to collect each month's winner for the entire year and create a COMAS Reef Shots calender for the next year.

An important note: The name Reef Shots is just an attempt at a clever name. The COMAS Photo of the Month contest is inclusive of all things related to our Marine Aquariums. So send us those pics of worms and fish and corals and anything else that looks great. So with that, welcome to COMAS Reef Shots. Please enjoy browsing the Reef Shots archive.

Photo Taking & Submission Tips:

First, check out Ximina's Photography Lessons. Ximina is both a professional photographer and a reefkeeper, so his lessons are targeted at the marine aquarium hobbiest. And the lessons cover the full spectrum of topics, everything from taking the pics in the first place to post processing the resultant pics in photoshop. His site truely has some amazing stuff for us!

Secondly, check out these tips, some specific to the COMAS Reef Shots program.

  • Submit the originally sized photo to the contest. We will resize it as needed for the website, etc. We need the original in case you win and it ends up in the calender.
  • Just a little bit of tweaking in Adobe Photoshop or the Gimp can correct color & white balance problems in your picture. This sort of image tweaking is a good thing. Refer to this article by Greg Rothschild [Reefkeeping.com] for more information.
  • Turn off the feature in your camera that prints dates on the picture.
