The January COMAS meeting began at 7:30pm on the 20th, after being postponed due to snow on the 14th. This was to be an informal meeting due to the number of people attending, which was over 130, and the number of prizes to be given away. There were virtually enough prizes for every paid member on the roster. The first thirty minutes were used by the membership to view the prizes to be given away. Attendees who wanted to join the club and existing members who wished to renew their membership chose this time to do so, before the prize giveaway.
Part of the large turnout of people for the January Meeting was due to a recent article in the Oklahoman, labeled “In the Swim”. This article featured Paul Whitbys’ 600 gallon reef tank, and information about COMAS. This article and the many flyers, at local fish stores, help boost attendance and membership enrolment to 120 people.
President Paul Whitby listed the donors of the prizes and expressed the club’s gratitude to each and every contributor. This year’s prize giveaway was largest to date.
Paul Whitby led the discussion about the plans for the year 2007. One such plan includes a club trip to The Dallas World Aquarium sometime in the summer. Paul also went over the COMAS Donor Program, where one can find a list of corals, invertebrates and macroalgaes that are available through different COMAS member's generosity. The goal of the COMAS Donor Program is to encourage education, environmental awareness, and husbandry techniques through aquaculture.
The COMAS Library Program is also available to the membership. All materials associated with the library have been donated by the membership and purchased with club money. The library was briefly discussed for the membership.
Members were encouraged to visit the COMAS website, which has many of the afore mentioned programs, including “Photo of the Month Contest”, “Equipment Checkout”, and “Buying & Selling Forum”. Many new sponsors have their websites linked to the COMAS site, and many offer specials to COMAS members. News from local fish stores is also listed.
Tim VanWagoner worked with the new members in receiving their coral fragments from the donor program. There were many corals to choose from. This was well received by the new members.
There was a silent auction on coral donations from Extreme Corals, which was very successful. There were some very nice pieces to choose from, many thanks to Paul Thompson for bring them to the meeting. Meeting adjourns at 9:30pm
